The Captain and The Kid

Today is my Grandpa Taylor’s birthday. He would have been 94 years old, but he passed away in November 2010.

He is gone, but not forgotten and when he passed away, I tweeted “For Grandpa “Though I cried, I was so proud to love a man so rare. He’s somewhere on the ocean now, the place he ought to be” ~@JimmyBuffett”

I have always thought of my Grandpa, when I hear “The Captain and The Kid.” Especially, the lyric, “I never used to miss the chance to climb up on his knee and listen to the many tales of life…” and today on his birthday, I thought of the song when I woke up, but I didn’t play it. I didn’t want to cry. I wanted to just reflect on all of my memories of him.

But The Universe, it’s sneaky I tell you, so sneaky…as I cleaned up my dinner mess, the iPod always on shuffle, played “The Captain and The Kid,” and found myself singing and looking at the window. For three minutes and fifteen seconds, sunlight filled my apartment and then returned to the clouds.

For those three minutes and fifteen seconds, I knew without a doubt that my Grandpa Taylor was with me. I felt it in my bones, in my heart, and in my soul and it brought me to my knees in tears to see, feel, and experience such a beautiful gift from The Universe and the Heavens.

And though I cried I was so proud to love a man so rare
He’s somewhere on the ocean now that’s where he oughta be
With one hand on the starboard rail he’s wavin’ back at me

Happy Birthday Grandpa. Love, your Scooter.
