Coffee and Conversations: 7:25 PM

~ 7:25 pm ~

Walsh sat across the loveseat on the hideous green couch, watching Porn and Ava play a game of war with cards. The two had smiles of children on their faces. “You know she’s in love with you.”

“What?” Garret asked, lowering the magazine he was reading.

“Ava. You know she’s in love with you.”

“Whatever.” Pretending to read his magazine again, Garrett could only hope that what Walsh said was true.

“You’re joking right.”

“Joking about what?”

Snatching the magazine from Garrett, he tossed it onto the coffee table. “We have known each other for years now and you cannot tell me that you haven’t known Ava has had the hots for you from the very day we all met outside.”

Garrett sighed. “I’ve kind of known.”

“Kind of?”

“Known. I’ve known.”

“Why haven’t you done anything about it?”

“Well, let’s see,” Garrett paused. He couldn’t believe he was about to spill his thoughts on everything. “There is you.”

“Me? What about me?”

“You’re in love with her.”

“Hell, I’ve been love with her since college. I know there are no feelings for me like what she has for you. And I’m ninety-five percent sure you feel the same way.”

“You can that additional five percent. I’ve realized recently just how much I do care for her.”

“Then do something. Don’t let her get away.”

“It’s actually funny you brought this up. I decided tonight was going to be the night I wanted to tell her everything.”

“What are you waiting for?”

“I don’t know. The right moment. The right time.”

Staring across to Ava, Walsh finally let go of her. “If she deserves anyone in her life, then it’s you. I see the emotions that you bring out in her and I know that when she is with you she is complete. She is happy.”

Inside, Garrett’s heart was dancing but his nerves were shaking and telling him that he couldn’t do it. He couldn’t hurt Ava. She had been the one woman he made sure to take care. She was the one he turned to when he needed a friend, a shoulder to lean on, and the support he so looked for in others. He didn’t understand why it had taken him so long to realize that Ava was the one he wanted to grow old with. “What if she says no?” he heard himself ask.

“What if you lose her by sitting here being a coward?”

Garrett knew Walsh was right.

Tonight had to be night.

It was now or never.
