Some months have an underlying theme or feeling and some months don’t. At first glance, I didn’t think September’s song had a theme, feeling, or pattern, but upon further inspection I see it’s about letting go so you can receive more. Which in reflection has become my meditation mantra this month “I release so I can receive”.
“Hold On” by Models
Started September with back to back shows of Models with Machinations. This was their opening song on the first day/set. These lyrics: “And when the morning comes I won’t be around But if you say the word I would always stay And you, hold on to what you’ve got…”
“About to Happen” by Siouxsie
Have always been a fan Siouxsie. Her solo album MANTARAY is pretty fabulous and this is where this song comes from. The overall message of the song is why it’s here and it’s an infectious little diddy too.
“U Should Know Better” by Robyn & Snoop Dog
Fun. Dancey. These lyrics are the best: “U should know better than to fuck with me. If you knew better, you would do better.”
“Nice to Meet You” by Our Lady Peace
Seriously, OLP know how to write songs that just hit me in the feels. I love everything about this song. These lyrics: “It’s all right I’m not running from these monsters. But I’ll wait for you to come down from that Milky Way…Hold up, you’re an angel, kinda nervous. It’s ok, you’ve done nothing to deserve this fate…I will wait for you to come down…”
“Atlantic City” by Bruce Springsteen
Dark lit bar plus this overhead, exacerbated my feelings of loneliness.
“Solsbury Hill” by Peter Gabriel
If you don’t sing “my heart goes boom boom boom” and feel like you can take over the world, then I don’t know what’s wrong with you. Peter says this about the song: “It’s about being prepared to lose what you have for what you might get, or what you are for what you might be. It’s about letting go.”
“Beat So Lonely” by Charlie Sexton
It was these lyrics that made me add this song: “…Wanting him only but the people never see her heart burning. That’s the secret that she keeps. Come on baby You know there’s something missing…”
“When I Met You” by David Bowie
These lyrics: “…When I met you I could not speak. How I met you. Then I met you. My spirit grows (you’re feeling again). My kind of truth (you’re drowning in pain). Could not exist (you are afraid)…”
“Something Good” by Dead Sara
I’ve always dug this song but on the particular Sunday it played, I was hearing the lyrics differently and the song took on a different meaning: “…You’ve got to take a chance for all you been through and lost…As a part of me in love with you and as a part of me you better hope that something good happens to you…”
“Southern State of Mind” by Darius Rucker
This month I’ve been asked about my manners a lot. Especially the ma’am and sir parts. This lady said it was my sign of submissiveness which I immediately said no, it’s my politeness because that’s the way I was raised. If she knew me and she doesn’t, she, in the words of Robyn above, “U should know better than to fuck with me. If you knew better, you would do better…” Anyway, Darius captures the essence of being born and raised on the South perfectly in this song.
“The Message” by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five (Krafty Kuts Remix)
This song comes courtesy of Nick. We are constantly sharing music and this was on a round of music he had shared with me and I really dig this mix but these lyrics are what kind of captured me: “…don’t push me ’cause I’m close to the edge. I’m trying not to lose my head. It’s like a jungle sometimes. It makes me wonder how I keep from goin’ under…” It kind of perfectly describes how I feel on some days. There are days where saying it’s too peoply out there is an understatement. When I say people are draining, a lot of people don’t understand. I am a shy, introvert, who battles mental demons off and on. Going out in public and interacting with world and being switched on isn’t easy for me. My so called “happy, smiling, outgoing daytime persona” is a fucking facade. It hides the “usually happy, shy, I like being alone, nerd, introvert”.
“You’re the Best Thing About Me” by U2
New U2. That is all you need to know.
