Sighing, Garrett stared at the door in front of him. He wanted to turn and walk away, but he knew if he did, he would never have Ava in his life again. He pushed a hand through his hair with another sigh. He raised his fist and knocked on the door. He stood there for a moment and then knocked again. He leaned closer in hopes of hearing movement on the other side, but heard nothing. Raising his fist again, he knocked once and landed on the door, but his second knock followed the opening door with no sound.
Hart stood before him. He looked as miserable as Ava had earlier, but there was no hate in his eyes. His eyes just revealed a man who had given up after he had lost the most important thing to him.
“Can I talk to you?” Garrett asked. “I promise, I won’t take up too much of your time.”
Hart didn’t respond. He spun on his heel and walked away from the door.
Stepping in, he closed the door behind him.
“What is it that you want Garrett?”
“I just need to say my piece and I’ll leave you.”
“I think you have actually said enough.” Hart felt himself ball his hands by his side and forced a quiet breath through his body.
“It’s you,” Garrett said.
“What?” he asked.
“It’s you,” he answered. “It’s you that Ava wants to be with. It’s you that Ava loves. Not me. Maybe she did at one point in time but the love she has in her heart right now only belongs to you.” Feeling his emotions rising, he shoved his hands into the pockets of his jacket as a way to rein them in. “I should have manned up years ago. I should have grabbed Ava and held her close versus holding her at arms length as if I’d might break her. That’s my fault and my fault only. All those years I knew she was in love with me and I did nothing. Nothing at all.” Garrett took a deep breath and sighed. “You’re the one man. You. Not me.”
“Why should I even believe you?”
“Because Ava said you were the one that made her forget about me,” he answered. As he repeated her words to Hart, his heart shattered into dust. There was no return from this.
Hart stared at him, unmoved by his words.
“She’s at her place now. Call her or go to her. Don’t fuck up and let the best thing that will ever happen to you slip away. I can see how much you care for her just looking at you right now. She’s the girl that all guys want in their life. Some of us are lucky to have her but some of us are even luckier because she loves us more than anything else. Don’t fuck it up.”
Hart only stared at him.
“That’s it man,” Garrett said as he rocked back on his heels. “That’s all I have to say. Ball’s in your court now.”
