Songs of My Life: April 2019

black-and-white-bloom-bloomingI can’t say the adage of April showers bring May flowers really works in Australia as it autumn and not spring. But April did bring a self imposed “Sober April”, I did and still am doing with a friend. We labeled this month, Sore and Sober as she started getting her booty kicked by the same trainer I do. So maybe April sore and sober brings May fit and fabulous. Personal training wise, it’s kicked by butt. In a good way, I’ve gotten stronger and more importantly for the first time, I don’t see the 2010 fat girl in the mirror. I see someone who’s a lot healthier and a helluva lot stronger.

I can’t damn complain as life is great and I am happy and maybe that was what April was all about: being happy.

“Animal” by Def Leppard
Walking home after a yoga session, this song came on and it just fit my mental mood. A classic hair metal anthem and I was feeling empowered and I could like the song said, “…I got that feeling in my blood…”

“Tides” by Jimmy Buffett
These lyrics: “…the pull of the moon lingers on, something we can’t escape…to whom it may concern, I’ve always tried to learn that the good days need to last…I follow the tides on currents far and wide…and that’s the reason I will never lose my smile…” This song just reminded me to never lose my smile.

“Grant Park” by Marvelous 3
Sunday iTunes shuffle and this gem. One cannot simply hear this song and be in a bad mood. You just raise your rock hands and and sing along.
This song is not on AppleMusic or Spotify, listen on YouTube.

“When Did Your Heart Go Missing” by Rooney
Another song that shuffled into my life. This song makes me do the Carlton Dance and bop along. It’s just a fun, upbeat song.

“Piece of Me” by Bullet for My Valentine
Have you heard a song, and just think, yep, nailing the mood I didn’t know I was in. This was a song that just did that. I wasn’t in any certain mood, but these lyrics: “Give me a reason why I should give a fuck…” just screamed YESSSS!

“Wilder in the Heart” by Butch Walker
I just dig the confession and emotion in this song. It’s a bit sad, mostly sweet, and just made me think of love that doesn’t have boundaries of time and space.

“Blossom” by I Mother Earth
Just love these lyrics and I sang them all month. “…whenever I fall, I make it sensational. I make it no less than awesome…”

“Day-O” by Harry Belafonte
This month, I heard this song everywhere. From posts on social media, to walking into stores, the cafes I visited, etc.

“I’m on Fire” by Bruce Springsteen
Another song that just played everywhere.

“Another Shot” by Lostprophets
This song was a reminder that no matter if you fail, you can take another shot. I don’t set goals. They’re too defining and most people, myself included, think that when you fail at reaching a goal, it’s the end. I set targets. I can always take a step back, realign and aim for the bulls eye on the target again.

“Sorry Not Sorry” by Demi Lovato
This song is here because of Brooke Lynn Hytes & Yvie Oddly’s Lip Sync for your life challenge. Best since JuJu Bee & Raven.

“Beat the Devil’s Tattoo” by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (BRMC)
I’ve also loved this song since the album came out. It’s a religious experience without going to church and this song played perfectly in the reboot of Hellboy and I came home just played the album on repeat.

“Saw Lightning” by Beck
Damn the new Beck is good. Speaking of religious. This song. Whew.

“Familiar Ground” by The Cinematic Orchestra
Perfect song for a low key Sunday.

“Don’t Eve Let Em” by Fitz and the Tantrums
Sometimes you just need a song, an anthem, a reminder to stand up tall, square your shoulders, lift your head and be the badass you know you are.
