Songs of My Life: February 2016

February…you were a wild one, but mostly you were just like the spray painted sign I saw on the side of a building: “moments in love”. You were a beautiful, inspiring, and spectacular month filled with some tears, lots of laughter and giggles, and fun. You made me a better person February. Thank you.

“BREATHE IN, BREATHE OUT, MOVE ON” by JIMMY BUFFETT
This song is always there for me as a reminder to let shit go. The what if’s, the what could’ve been, the what-the-fuck-ever. We all hold on to things longer than we should but what we need to do is let it go. If we hold on to things that no longer serve us or hold on to things like resentment, anger, hurt, it just sours our souls. Sometimes you just have to do what Jimmy sings… “If a hurricane doesn’t leave you dead, it will make you strong. Don’t try to explain it just nod your head. Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On…According to my watch the time is now, the past is dead and gone…”

“DOWNTOWN” by PETULA CLARK
So The X-Files came back into my life for 6 glorious episodes. This song was featured in the episode “Home Again” and this episode had me sobbing like a giant fucking baby for most of it. Part monster of the week and part moments in the life of Mulder and Scully. The episode hit too close to my heart like the episode “Audrey Pauley”. It had me missing my mom and just like Scully asking for one more moment with her mom, I wanted the same. One more moment. One more “good night baby.” In the end, I think that’s all we want when we lose a loved one…one more moment.

“OLD FLAME” by ALABAMA
Some of you who know me, might be thinking, “huh?” on this song, but iTunes on shuffle never leads me astray. This song popped up after I was listening to “Downtown” and it has always reminded me of my parents. Their love for each other was electric and lasts even though one is here on earth and one is in the Universe watching over us. They are not only each other’s old flames, they are each other’s only flames.

“SEARCH AND DESTROY” by 30 SECONDS TO MARS
These lyrics. That is all: “Found my faith, living in sin. I’m no Jesus, but neither are you my friend. I’m a whore, a birth of broken dreams. This simple answer is never what it seems…Sold my soul to heaven and to hell. Sick as my secrets, but never gonna tell. I’m to blame, burden of my dreams. A curse of faith and a blessing I believe…”

“SOME DAYS ARE DIAMONDS” by AMOS LEE (John Denver Cover)
Amazing cover by Amos of John’s song and it’s just a reminder that all days can’t be shiny and pretty because sometimes they’re dull and not so pretty.

“TIN CUP CHALICE” by JIMMY BUFFETT
This song is how Jimmy felt at home at Mallory Square in Key West. I know that feeling. I have stepped into Key West and my soul has known that’s where it belonged and I feel that in Australia even more. I know without a doubt, I belong here. When I have a moment of doubt, this song is my reminder of that.

“FALLS APART” by SUGAR RAY
I know people think I’m living it up here in Australia, but it has been hard, it has been hard work, it has been luck, and it has been taking risks without knowing if there is a reward and it has been close your eyes and fucking pray that if I jump I don’t fall flat on my fucking face. I get lonely and want to have a bitch and moan session, a whoa is me session or a help me I think I’m drowning session, but there’s no one to turn to here so I suck it up and put on a facade or as the song says “she falls apart by herself”. That’s better than keeping it all in and letting it turn my spirit into a sour puss who hates life.

“WORLD” by SICK PUPPIES
This song was gifted to me via iTunes shuffle. I connected with the lyrics: “Welcome to my world, where everyone I ever need always ends up leaving me alone. Another lesson burned and I’m drowning in the ashes. Kicking. Screaming…”

“FAILURE” by BREAKING BENJAMIN
This song was on my 10k training playlist. Somewhere on a run, these lyrics stopped me in my tracks and made me cry. “Tired of feeling lost, tired of letting go. Tear the whole world down. Tired of wasted breath, tired of nothing left…Failure.”

“RUFF FYDERS ANTHEM” by DMX
If you know me, this is probably another WTF moments in music choice. I have to really kick Foggy in the shin for this song. Because he posted the following photo, I had this song in my head for days. FOR DAYS.

“LEAVING TOWN” by DEXTER FREEBISH
Holy shit, flashback to the 90’s. This is another song I sang out loud to myself for weeks and I mean full on break out into song at random times. I’m not even sure why it popped into my head but it has been the worst ear worm to get rid of even if I like the song.

“I’M NOT WORRIED ABOUT IT” by GARETH ASHER
This song is for the worrier in me. “I’m gonna live and I’m gonna die. I’m gonna hold my head up high…Life is sweet and we’re short on time…”

“TOUCH” by MOTHXR
I really dig the tunes this band is spitting out. They just released their full length album CENTERFOLD and it’s pretty damn good. Lyrically, this song is just dirty hot. Musically, this song is so 1980’s. It mixes together beautifully. Get the album. Dig on it.
