Songs of My Life: January 2017

One month down eleven more to go. Not that I’m rushing 2017 through. So far so good. Sitting down and listening to all the songs again, I feel that the theme or message of January was about loving, being there, standing up for what you believe in and never giving up. That’s what I took away from all the songs. It’s not like the Universe says, “Shelia, this month’s message is this” but boy I wish it did…at times anyway.

You can listen and watch the videos HERE or below. If you’re a Spotify user, listen HERE (3 songs are not on Spotify)

“Don’t Follow by Alice In Chains
I just connected to these lyrics: “Hey, I ain’t never coming home. Hey, I’ll just wander my own road. Hey, I can’t meet you here tomorrow. Say goodbye don’t follow…I get so lost and don’t know how and it hurts to care, so I won’t now…”

“For All These Times” by Lostprophets
I can’t remember the exact reason why I added this song into January’s list and I didn’t make any notes about, but listening to it, I think it was these lyrics: “The hardest part of moving forward are these times when we all stand alone…Give me something to believe in. Give me someone to believe in. For all these times, and it starts today…”

“I Keep Forgettin'” by David Bowie
This is from Bowie’s “TONIGHT” album and it’s not a favorite of music snobs but what do they know. I freaking love this album. It’s been on repeat this whole month and this is one of my top 10 David Bowie tracks. I love love love these lyrics: “I keep forgetting you don’t love me no more…Though it’s plain as can be. That you’re finished with me. I just can’t get it through my head…”

“Spaceman” by Angie Aparo
God I still love this song and it still gives me chills every time I hear it: “If you get tired of satellite flyers and fame lets you down. Under the wire and over the moon, I’m around…”

“Hole in My Heart” by Econoline Crush
Still one of my favorite bands from the 90s and Canada. Know this song is about a girl turning tricks but these lyrics hit me in my gut. “You punched a hole in my heart just for the misery…You punched a hole in my heart just to make me hurt…You choose to hurt to feel…Just want to be the only one you ever wanted…I’m willing to fight it through…”

“Get Free” by Whissell
I binged watch 10 hours straight of Cameron Crowe’s “ROADIES”. Was it the best show ever? No, but god damn it was good. I”m bummed I’ll never find out what happens to everyone since they cancelled the show after one season. If you work or worked in the music industry, the show resonates to you. If you’re a diehard fan of music, this show will connect to you. It’s about people who believe in the music and in the music-makers. About the ones who believe in the heart of rock-n-roll. This song played in an episode and I thought it was Grace Askew but it’s a young fresh gal called Whissell. Love  her voice in this song and when I heard these lyrics: “You hold me like you want me to stay. You only wanna keep me from running away. You hold me like you want me to stay…”

“Tangled Up in Blue” by Bob Dylan
Also from “ROADIES”. These lyrics: “And I just grew tangled up in blue…From me to you, tangled up in blue…I became withdrawn. The only thing I knew how to dow as to keep on keepin’ on. Like a bird that flew. Tangled up in blue…”

“Are You Satisfied” by Reignwolf
From “ROADIES”. Can you see the impact of music here!?! This song was “The Song of the Day” by the road crew and the scene featured Reignwolf and I fell in complete musical love with him. Amazing performance and these lyrics: “Are you satisfied? There’s nowhere to go. I’ve been paralyzed…I do anything for you. You just didn’t know?”

“Maggot Brain” by Funkadelic
From “ROADIES”. I love me some Funkadelic and this song, in all of its 10 minute glory, is just amazing. By accident, I discovered that if you listen to this song on repeat while reading Dante’s INFERNO, it makes it easier to read. This tune has been on repeat all month.

“California by Tyler Lyle
From “ROADIES”. These lyrics hit me. “I’m not sorry I fell in love and I’m not sorry that you never cared enough…I did right and I did wrong. You did too, but that’s not why I’m gone. t’s just motion and it’s just time. Every day we find ourselves a little further down the line.”

“Dance Off” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Idris Elba
Not from “ROADIES” but damn this song is fun. The dynamic duo of Macklemore & Lewis know how to have fun. I prefer their upbeat and fun songs vs their serious and this one is just sheer fun from lyrics to music.

“Out of Sight Out of Mind” by Models
I feel like I have heard this song almost every day in January but I don’t mind. It’s such an infectious tune.

“Beautiful Day” by U2
Somedays a song hits you and reminds you to just breathe in and breathe out and just realize it’s a beautiful day. This was what this song did for me.

“Bullet” by Injected
A band whose album I played on repeat when it came out. I just dig the vibe of this song. “What did you sell your soul for? Was it a gun and a bullet and a chance at revenge?”

“Say It’s Possible” by Terra Naomi
This little gem came from iTunes on Shuffle as most of the songs do. It just clicked with me as the chorus started and made me replay it from the beginning. “Don’t wait, act now. This amazing offer won’t last long. It’s only a chance to save the path we’re on. I know there are more exciting things to talk about and in time we’ll sort it out. And though they say it’s possible. To me, I don’t see how it’s probable. I see the course we’re on spinning farther from what I know. I’ll hold on. Tell me that you won’t let go…This could be something beautiful. Combine our love into something wonderful…”

“Diamond Eyes” by Shinedown
Always been a Shinedown fan and I, of course, dig their “heavier” stuff and this song is one of them. I love these lyrics. I’m on the front line. Don’t worry I’ll be fine. The story is just beginning. I say goodbye to my weakness. So long to the regret and now I know that I’m alive…”

“I’ll Be Waiting” by Michael Franti & Spearhead
This song should given to everyone one cares about to let them know that you’ll always be there. “But I won’t leave you alone. Whenever you call me, whenever you need me. Wherever you wander until you see me. I’ll be waiting, I’ll be waiting for you…It’s gonna be alright now”
