I couldn’t decide on a Chosen 3 this month that spoke Light, Love, and Magic to me.
Of all the months, Light, Love, and Magic was definitely needed. I started July feeling rather hopeless. Found an undercurrent of anger and hostility simmering within me and then found peace. The US is a hot Corvid-19 mess, led by a narcissistic, racist, misogynistic, asshat and the people that voted for him and support him are fucking stupid racist misogynistic asshats too. And if you voted or support him and say you’re not any of those, you don’t get to pick which qualities you like in a man that suits your needs. You’re an accomplice and complicit in everything that mother fucker does. So take your ‘I’m not like him’ and choke on a bag of fucking dicks you cunts. I cannot wait until November to use the power of my vote to get that piss poor excuse of a human out of office.
While I watch from afar the out of control dumpster fire the US has become, I am very grateful and honored to be here in Australia. Their politicians and citizens aren’t perfect and they also battle their own systemic racism, but they’re not all complete dumbasses who thought the coronavirus was a hoax and think science is false.
So this month, I chose 4 songs that just allowed me to channel the sheer anger and hostility I have towards the morally corrupt, dumb, stupid, morons of the human race into something that could drive me to just be a better fucking human every day I am alive.

“All the Best Moves” by Smith & Burrows
A little bit of joy from Smith & Burrows. Light, fluffy and a nice ray of light I needed.
“A Little Bit Off” by Five Finger Death Punch
Boy, this song is a damn near perfect description of how I was feeling at the beginning of July, Off. Hopeless. Angry. Hostile. Fuck off everyone.
“The Shift” by 10 Years
New song by 10 Years and like FFDP above, this song, lyrically kind of describes some of the feelings and thoughts of July, “I didn’t feel the change but don’t feel the same. I never knew a shift was happening…we are a violent virus without a remedy…” And if that last line isn’t apropos for humanity. Corvid-19 might be a true virus, but the hateful humans are a violent virus that begats more hateful humans.
“Down to Hell” by Asking Alexandria
I was leaving the office when this song shuffled into my ears. A bit aggressive. A bit loud. A whole lot of fuck yeah! I like Danny’s voice in the song. These lyrics: “…I don’t care what you think about where I choose to draw my line…I’m coming up, I’m going down to hell. I wanna find somewhere to lose my mind. Dig around inside and go a little crazy…”
“Side of a Bullet” by Nickelback
Say what you will about Nickelback or hate them if you want, but I fucking love this song and have been a fan of their music since I saw them play an afternoon set at Charlotte Center City Fest in 2000. This song is a tribute to Dimebag Darrell and is just a fucking rocker. It also includes guitar solos that Darrell was meant to be use on the Pantera albums Vulgar Display of Power and Far Beyond Driven. These lyrics: “How could you take his life away? What made you think you had the right? How could you be so full of hate? To take away somebody’s life?”
“Jesus Walks” by Lostprophets
One of my favorite songs off the Weapons album. Lostprophets were great at writing anthems for those that felt a little lost. This song is one of those anthems.
“Love Destruction” by Warrior Soul
From the 1992 album Salutations from the Ghetto Nation, this song could easily be the US’s 2020 anthem: “…You love destruction..”
“Get Up, Stand Up” by The Wailers
I believe and support everything in the image on the right and this song motivates me to still do what I can with what I have to help boost the voices of those who need to be heard. I am far from perfect but I know without a doubt we are all human and bleed the same color and that freedom from fear is right we all should have.
“Makeba” by Jain
No lie, heard this in the shower while I was at the gym. I was hooked by the beat and vocals. The song was just soul moving and I loved the very distinct African vibe I was hearing so I was surprised that when I found the artist it was a French woman but I’m a fan nonetheless. The song is in reference to Miriam Makeba, nicknamed Mama Africa. She was South African singer, songwriter, actress, United Nations goodwill ambassador, and civil rights activist. I highly recommend listening to An Evening with Harry Belafonte and Miriam Makeba.
“All I Want is You” by U2
Went into a deep dive of U2 and listened to all 14 studio albums in chronological order and this song was a song that I always found myself humming. It’s from the 1988 hybrid studio and live album Rattle and Hum and is still a perfect tune.
“Little Things” by 9Electric
Discovered this band because I am a fan of the now defunct Opiate for the Masses and OFTM singer is the singer for this band. It reminds me of music from the 80s.
“Stick that in Your Country Song” by Eric Church
Who says country can’t get angry. I love this little fuck you rocker from Eric Church.
“Shot in the Dark” by Ozzy Osbourne
It played on a walk home from work one night and I played it on repeat. Still my favorite Ozzy song.
“Hooch” by Everything
Originally from their Supernatural album, the version that sucked me back in time is their In the Juju Underworld version. It’s got a little more bass, a little more groove. Goddamn I miss this band. They were amazing live and are just the epitome of feel good.
“Get Out of the Way (Gold Heart” by Econoline Crush
Oh, my word, EC is back. It may be a remake of a song they released on 2008’s Ignite album but I don’t care. They have a new album coming out and that’s all I care about. This little upgrade to an already great song rocked my world.
“Clapback” by RuPaul featuring Jujubee, Miz Cracker and Shea Coulee)
This is just a great little dance tune and a fantastic message. Take no shit. Clapback. These lyrics: “Get your girls. Side by side, don’t you hold it in. Clapback, speak your mind. Say it twice so they don’t forget. Clapback, when they talk to you like that. Don’t just sit and take it, just get right up in their face and clapback.”
“Queen in Me” by Jujubee
Ending July with this empowering song from one of my favorite drag queens, Jujubee. This song is dedicated to my nieces, Riley and Taylor, and to my sister, Brenda, and all the gals in my life that might not recognise the queen in themselves. Because I know for sure, it’s taken me a long time to recognise the queen in me. These lyrics: “Lift your head up. You’re more than you can see. Keep on, keep up. Write your own story. I’ve found my strength. I’ve found a way to be free. I tip my crown to the queen in me. This is who I’m meant to be. Beautiful, powerful and stronger than I’ve ever known.
