Songs of My Life: November 2020

November, you out did yourself.
You gave me:
* summiting Australia’s highest mountain, at 2,228 metres (7,310 ft) – Mount Kosciuszko
* my 5th anniversary in Australia
* my 45th trip around the sun
* Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as President and Vice President
Thank you. You did all right.

THE CHOSEN 3

LIGHT (energy): “A Pirate Looks at Forty” by Jimmy Buffett
My favorite song. A reminder how far I’ve come and that my journey further will be just as amazing.

LOVE (vibration): “Always Love” by Nada Surf
The song says it best: always love.

MAGIC (frequency): “Big Western Sky” by Kik Tracee
My 2nd favorite song. A reminder to appreciate and enjoy the moment.

FROM THE UNIVERSE

“B.O.B (Bombs Over Baghdad)” by Outkast
I just fucking love this song and will never get tired of hearing it on repeat.

“Rise Up” by Andra Day
The first time I heard this song was on the “ROSA” episode of Doctor Who which was about Rosa Parks. Even if you are not a Doctor Who fan or have never watched it. Trust me, do yourself a favor and watch this episode. It is a powerful episode. Even as I sit here and write and think of it, I am moved to tears. It is hands down one of the best episodes of Doctor Who. On Election Day and into the weekend, this was the song that kind of just played in the back of my head as I watched the votes come in. I stayed up way too late watching the election results and on a hike up Mount Kosciuszko, the group I was with asked for updates every chance there was cell phone signal. When the votes pushed Biden over the line, I cried. Voices of those who lost their lives to racism, Covid-19, and hatred had been heard. These lyrics: “When the silence isn’t quiet and it feels like it’s getting hard to breathe and I know you feel like dying but I promise we’ll take the world to its feet and move mountains…All we need, all we need is hope and for that we have each other…And we will rise…We’ll rise up and we’ll do it a thousand times again.”

“Upside Down” by Editors
Just a banger from Editors.

“Killing the Ghost” by Matthew Ryan vs the Silver State
This song was just a reminder to cut the bullshit, toxic people from my life. I always call it “weeding the garden” but sometimes even the garden has been weeded, ghosts hang around. I spent a lot of November just killing the ghosts of what my life was by removing, deleting, and unfollowing those who were the ghosts. It felt good to let go.

“Work That” by Mary J. Blige
Kamala Harris walked out to this song before her speech and it was these lyrics: “… Just because the length of your hair ain’t long and they often criticize you for your skin tone. Wanna hold your head high. Cause you’re a pretty woman. Get your runway stride home and keep going. Girl live ya life…Let em get mad. They gonna hate anyway. Don’t you get that? Doesn’t matter if you’re going on with their plan. They’ll never be happy cause they’re not happy with themselves…”

“Keep Your Head Up” by Ben Howard
Song title says it all. Keep your head up.

“Right Where I Belong” by The Constellations
This song reminded me that I was right where I belong.

“Hands Up” by Dead Sara
New Dead Sara. That’s all you need to know.

“State of the Union (STFU)” by Public Enemy featuring DJ Premier
The lyrics to this entire song. I mean ALL the words.

“Thinking of You” by A Perfect Circle
The bass line in this song is why I added this song.

“Just Wait” by Nada Surf
Damn, does Nada Surf know how to write a song that just connects to the soul or what?! Off their latest album, Never Not Together, these lyrics: “…When it feels too big and you can’t find your place. You got too many choices. Are you the only one who doesn’t know their way?
There’re so many noises. You’re gonna be just fine. It might take some time but you gotta know it’s gonna be okay. Just wait…”

“Burning Man” by Dierks Bentley featuring Brothers Osborne)
Damn what a good song. These lyrics: “…Some days I’m headed in the right direction and some days I ain’t even close. I’m a little bit steady but still little bit rolling stone. I’m a little bit heaven but still a little bit flesh and bone. Little found, little don’t know where I am
I’m a little bit holy water but still a little bit burning man…”

“Soul” by Lee Brice
From Lee’s latest album, this is just a damn fun song about being in love.

“I Can Dream About You” by Dan Hartman
This was one of my mom’s favorite songs and the moment I needed to know she was around, this song played several times that day.

“Fight Like the Devil” by Econoline Crush
New Econoline Crush and I can’t get enough of it.

“If You” by Lee Brice
Another fun one from Lee’s new album. A great little “fuck off” if you don’t like me

“Sugarbuzz” by Marvelous 3
Another little “fuck off” song.

“Not Falling” by Mudvayne
A perfect song for one of those days where screaming would help but you can’t because you don’t want to be seen as a mad person.

“Earlylight” by MuteMath
Don’t remember the exact reason why I had the “yep, going to add this” song, but I don’t care. It’s MM and it’s a great song.

“Everyone’s Fightin’ the Same Damn Fight” by The Lovemakers
Sometimes I just need to be reminded we are all usually fighting the same damn fight.

“Can You Hear Me Now” (remix) by Bear and a Banjo featuring Zac Brown
Damn infectious little tune here.

“Prisencolinensinainciusol” by Adriano Celentano
Boy did Twitter bring this song into my life from multiple people of various types. First from a music friend, then from a hockey feed and when it showed a 3rd time, I paid attention. It wasn’t trending and the 3 feeds are so far removed from being close that it just seemed very odd they would all 3 be sharing the same song through out the month. Anyway, what I really dig about the song is the beat and the horns. The lyrics to the song itself are complete and utter gibberish.

“Tin Cup Chalice” by Jimmy Buffett
Jimmy released an album at the end of the month called “Songs You Don’t Know By Heart” of recorded songs and if you’re not a fan, back in the day, he released a greatest hits called “Songs You Know By Heart” but boy do I know this song by heart. It’s one of my favorite songs by Jimmy. It is the epitome of Key West for me. It is the song that is Key West for me. It would be my love song to Key West.
