You Me and Elvis

you me and Elvis
kicking off the American dream
as families start to scream

neon signs and flashing light
feel like nothing’s gonna be all right

two hearts beating unabashed
no broken bottles
no hotel trashed

singing viva las vegas
screaming it’ll be all right
rolling the dice thrice
with lady luck by our side

you me and Elvis
living the American dream
but it’s not what it seems

racial injustice fights
and the republican party bites

before we are slashed
hit the throttle
and let’s get smashed

singing viva las vegas
screaming it’ll be all right
rolling the dice thrice
with lady luck by our side

you me and Elvis
nightmares of the American dream
lovers on the run without a master scheme

the future could be right
if we make it through the night

without being harassed
will be heroes and role models
and rise above the ignorance amassed

singing viva las vegas
screaming it’ll be all right
rolling the dice thrice
with lady luck by our side

just you me and Elvis
singing viva las vegas
beneath the neon signs and flashing lights

just you me and Elvis
knowing all is right
with lady luck by our side

you me and Elvis
let’s kick start the American dream
singing viva las vegas
at the top of our lungs
until our last breath screams

you me and Elvis
are the American dream

When I started this poem, I wanted it to have a song like feel. I had this vision in my head of a couple getting married by Elvis and that’s how this started. Usually when I write a poem, I finish it within a day or so, this one took me about 5.5 months. After the first 3 stanzas, everything I wrote just didn’t seem right, but it came together in the end. I’m really proud of this piece. It’s one of my favourites I’ve probably ever written.
