I’ve had Eric Church’s “Chief” album for a while, but like any other album I own, I’ll load it, play it, and forget it about it.
I heard “Springsteen” on the radio and fell in love with the song all over again…
I love the lyrics, “Funny how a melody sounds like a memory. Like a soundtrack to a July Saturday night…”
I have songs that are memories to me. They will always bring up certain memories in my life. It’s why music is magical. Big Wreck probably captured the meaning of it best in their song, “That Song” and with the lyrics, “So I always get nostalgic with that song…So you crank that song and it might sound doomed…cause this is rare, I really love that tune…I love that song…”
“Closer to the Edge” by Thirty Seconds to Mars – this song will always remind me of my mom. When I arrived to the hospital, it was playing in the car and when I got into the car later that night, I decided I would play the song on repeat until she got out, however she got it. It will always bring tears to my eyes and be my anthem on how to live my life. I have the lyrics tattooed on me. When I hear it now, I know my mom is with me and if I ever doubt or question anything, this song will always have the answers I seek and need. “I’m not saying I’m sorry…I will never forget, I will never regret, I will life my life…closer to the edge.”
“Drink in My Hand” by Eric Church – this song will always remind me of my niece, Taylor. Yes, it’s about drinking but to her it was about having her sippy cup in her hand and dancing in the living room. It was one of the first songs she learned to sing.
“U Got It Bad” by Usher – there is a moment when a child learns that music is entertaining and there is nothing more entertaining than the memory I have of my oldest niece, Riley, standing on the kitchen table with a table a dish towel draped around her shoulders and singing in to a wooden spoon. For the longest time, I only knew this song as the “Stuck In the House” song.
“Electric Avenue” by Eddy Grant – New Years Day Day 2011…The Gin Mill was open and this song was sung by Suzanne, myself, Heather, Nikki, Day Day (that’s what we named the poor guy), Shortie, and Keith…”HIGHER!”
“Loca People” by Sak Noel – Australia December 2011…this little gym was discovered as Heather, Suzanne, & myself were in a store in Byron Bay. It became our go to getting ready for fun theme song.
“Two Wheels” by Wax – Key West 2011…Suzanne and I riding around the island in the dark going down road after road just to see where they end and singing this song at the top of our lungs.
“Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey – Mojito Madness Party May 2010…nothing like your friends singing this at the top of their lungs in the middle of the day drunk on mojitos.
There are so many more songs…but these are some of my most valued memories…
