Policy of Truth

truth ::
1. the true or actual state of a matter
2. conformity with fact or reality
3. a verified or indisputable fact, proposition, principle, or the like
4. the state or character of being true
5. actuality or actual existence

In keeping with September’s theme of exploring & exposing, I am exploring the word truth and what it means to me and I immediately think of “Policy of Truth” by Depeche Mode.

When I was younger, listening to this song, I always thought it mean to tell the truth.

Now that I’m older and listening to the lyrics closer, I am having a “strike that, reverse it” thought about this song.

– It’s time to pay the price for not listening to advice and deciding in your youth on the policy of truth…
– It’s time to face the consequence for delivering the proof in the policy of truth…
– Never again is what you swore the time before…
– You’d better learn your lesson well. Hide what you have to hide and tell what you have to tell. You’ll see your problems multiplied if you continually decide to faithfully pursue the policy of truth…

Looking at the lyrics together and line by line, I actually agree with the song more now than I did when I was younger (maybe wiser, maybe dumber). Especially with the lyric: Hide what you have to hide and tell what you have to tell. You’ll see your problems multiplied if you continually decide to faithfully pursue the policy of truth…

First and foremost, I think the only person we really need to be truthful to is that reflection in the mirror (ourselves).

But don’t you want to be told the truth, I can hear people ask?

What is truth?

What I find true is not the same thing you might find true.

For example:
Let’s look at people in our lives.
I may have a family member/friend/guy/whatever I love/know/like in my life and I know that person as a stand up person. You on the other hand might know them as well but know them to be shady as fuck.
I know one version and it’s my truth.
You know one version and it’s your truth.
I don’t know them as shady and you don’t know them as stand up. If I am honest with myself and every interaction I’ve had with that person and know that person to only be stand up in my life, why would I believe otherwise?
It’s like when one of your friends dates a douche/bitch. Until that douche/bitch side comes through, they only see the good. Nothing you can say or do matters.
It’s their truth vs your truth.

If you choose to be untruthful to me, that is your choice. You have your reasons of why. I won’t judge you (or I am at least working on being judgement free in my life). I might feel an emotion of hurt or whatever but if I ask myself why I feel this way, I have to take into consideration if you are projecting that feeling on me because you were never truthful to yourself, especially if I was truthful to myself when it came to you. (I know that may sound/be strange to some)

Again, I fall back on the lyric: Hide what you have to hide and tell what you have to tell…

I will be truthful to myself and by doing so, I hope it will let me be truthful to everyone else…because to be honest, I usually say what I mean and mean what I say. My inside voice is my outside voice. My outdoors voice is my indoors voice. The filters in my brain, mind, mouth are non-existance. Right or wrong. Good or bad.

So in exploring what truth means to me, it’s me being honest with only me.

It’s the truthfulness I have with myself.

It’s the truthfulness that is given to me from the Universe.

It’s the truthfulness that I hopefully receive from others.

It’s the truthfulness that is being told to me.

I know this is as my truth. Right or wrong. Good or bad.

This is my truth, what is yours?
