RILEY – STAY YOUNG

Today, I got a text from your mom about how she was called to the school to come and get you. Not because you were the hellion spawn who unleashed terror on your classmates or because you were obnoxious to your teachers (which you aren’t), but because today, you went from being her “baby girl” to her “big girl.” Today, you got your first menstrual cycle. She said the nurse said you were calm, cool, and collected and understood what was happening. When I read the text at work, I got tears in my eyes. You’re growing up and there’s nothing I can do about it. All I can do is be there for you and arm you with the information you need to survive this crazy world. I think your mom did fantastic today. Giving you what you need and offering you what she could. I am so proud of you. I know it doesn’t seem like the greatest gift you could ever get and there will years of having to put up with it, but today, even though you’re a “big girl,” you will always be the “baby girl” I held in my arms as a heart & lung monitor clung to you.

I wish I knew what you know at your age. Twenty-three years makes the difference in the world and I will be very honored one day when you’re there for my own child when she needs someone to look up to.

I know this change in your body may seem weird, crazy, gross, exciting, or whatever emotion you are feeling, but know that you are not alone. You are never alone. You are loved, you are beautiful, and you are blessed.

Love,
~Shelia
